I get what you are saying about letting the work stand on its own, Garrett, and I will say I think it does. But also, the world is changing, faster than anyone can possibly keep up, and while I learned a couple things about the text from the commentaries, mostly it's let your audience get to know you a bit - see the person behind the writing - and from that perspective it has served you well. "Personal engagement" seems to be the new normal, whether we're totally comfortable with it or not. Practice makes perfect. ;)

Thank you for saying that, Troy. I truly hope it can stand on its own. And I think you're 100% right, it's changing so fast and it's becoming more and more important for audiences to see you and to get to know you as an individual. I suspect it's something I'll continue wrestling with as my career goes on, but it's great to hear that the commentaries didn't come across as some force of influence as I feared they might have.
