This is great! Your style is really refreshing. It’s fast-paced but not simple. It’s clear you’ve put a lot of effort into actual sentence construction and I really appreciate that. It reads beautifully. Well done!
Great job on Part 1, Garrett! Super engaging, beautifully written despite the dark subject matter - love a good post-apocalypse, the darker the better, and I think plenty of light in Reyn's spirit to keep the grim circumstances in perspective - definitely rooting for her. Yes, flavors of "The Road" and a little bit of "A Quiet Place" - interested to see how you spin it.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that. I hadn't considered "A Quiet Place" as a comp recently, but definitely. I went into "A Quiet Place" not knowing much about the project(s), and have left each experience impressed in different ways.
I'm so glad I came across your Substack. I enjoyed reading the first part of you novel and I will definitely follow along. While I wouldn't necessarily count myself in the audience segment for this genre (if it were a film, it would be very hard for me to watch), I absolutely loved the writing.
I'm glad I came across yours as well, Claudia -- it's wonderful (and anyone looking at this comment should check it out --> https://claudiabefu.substack.com/).
Thanks so much for reading and for the incredibly kind words. I'm happy to know that you're liking it so far :)
your writing is keeping me good company on my sleepless night tonight! I'm so invested already. I'm especially enjoying Reyn's perspective, it is so suspenseful - I am right with her, wondering what signs of danger she can't hear. the silence is palpable.
I'm sorry you were having a sleepless night, but hearing that my writing was keeping you company throughout it might just be the nicest bit of feedback I've received. Many thanks for spending time with the novel ❤️
😂 If there's one feeling I want readers to walk away from Pt. 1 with, it's definitely that. Thank you for reading, and for commenting! I appreciate you taking the time.
Wow. Powerful first part, Garrett. The relationship and dynamics between Reyn and her mother are heartrending and realistic. I can imagine the world after being this harrowing, and the things people do to survive they wouldn't if life was peaceful and full.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate you reading and commenting. I loved writing their relationship, and then refining it over time. There's a lot going on in their world providing interference to outward displays of it, but there's a lot of love there between them still. And it's an odd thing, having written the first draft(s) of this pre-parenthood, and publishing it here and now as the dad of 2.5 year old. I don't know if I have concrete takeaways from it just yet...but it's odd. Not bad odd. Just odd.
That must be an interesting experience! You clearly had the intuition and inner knowledge of how this parenthood thing works. It must help to be a parent now too, feeling even more protective of your child and children as a whole now.
Aw thanks, I think that's a good way to frame it, and one that I hadn't considered -- having the intuition back then. And totally... there's a story I'm working on right now with a mother and a daughter and it's interesting -- and more fun, to be honest -- coming at the relationship with some actual experience in the field haha, albeit just a couple of years.
Mayyyyybe? I'm not sure just yet! Right now it's kind of in what I'm calling its Draft 0 phase, where I'm typing out the story but it's filled with a TON of comments in the margins to integrate later. If it ends up fitting length requirements, I might try to submit it to a few journals, but we'll see... right now it's a very shaggy 62 or 63 pages and the draft isn't quite finished 😂

Too kind, thanks Luke, I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. I'm so glad you're liking it so far.
Very well constructed. The intensity is always palpable. Haven't finished it all but will get back to it.
Thanks so much for reading, Scott, and for the comment. I really appreciate it.

Very compelling both in the story and the writing. Looking forward to more.
Thanks Jim, I appreciate you taking the time to read and pass along the kind words.

Wow. I read Chapter one. This really inspired me to clean up my room.

We all have it! But it's something that can also be harnessed even stronger. That sounds lovely! Will you be sharing it here on Substack?

That is like a novella at this point! LOL I wish you best of success with writing. I'm sure it's going to be amazing.
I apologize for my delay here, but wow, what a wonderful comment to come upon. Thank you very, very much for reading, and for ordering.
I'm so glad to know that the work has resonated with you thus far. I'm hoping of course that it continues!
If you have any issue at all with the order, please don't hesitate to let me know -- I'll definitely do what I can to correct!
