What a selection! (Thanks for the shoutout Garrett, that's very kind of you. I'm in awe of your awe!)

"And I did that sort of grimace-cringe face you do when you think you’re about to spend roughly seven hours of your life doing something you’re not all that excited about"

Can so relate, haha. That's the exact response I had when my wife popped this on. I think the first episode was OK. Not hugely my thing. But I may reconsider after what you've written here. We have minimal watch time during the week though, so at the moment that's used by Succession (until it's all over) and working through Beef.

Of course! Love your work, Nathan, always a joy to see something of yours in my inbox. Do give the show another go! I’ve heard great things about Beef and am eager to check that out. We tried Succession a while back and I think I was just in a weird, funky mood or something, because about two episodes in I was just like, “everybody seems terrible.” 😂 Which isn’t usually like me. But, it’s on a list of, “try again soon,” I suppose. I mean, it has to be wildly popular for a reason, right? Gotta be something there I didn’t see/feel at first.

Haha, yeah, everyone in Succession is terrible, but for some reason that makes it compelling watching. There is *some* growth in the characters, but mostly they flit between terrible and more terrible. It's brilliant writing, though. S1 and S4 are my favourites.

Love these pieces that rundown what you’ve experienced. I’ll be checking some of these out soon!

Great rec's Garrett! And you totally get cool points for watching Daisy Jones. It takes a special husband to go all in on semi-Fleetwood Mac fan fiction. Your wife is very lucky! I did get a kick out of this line: "And I did that sort of grimace-cringe face you do when you think you’re about to spend roughly seven hours of your life doing something you’re not all that excited about." This is exactly how I feel about my husband's love of Oasis.

😂 the things we’ll bear for the ones we love, am I right? Thank you for reading and commenting, I really appreciate it. I also really appreciate you adding cool points vs. taking them away. I do worry that severe deductions may have occurred yesterday, however, after this was published, as whilst jogging I found some extra motivation and pep when Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock” started playing.

🤷‍♂️ What can I say? Classic hype music, am I right?

OMG I was going to post about Recompose! (Still will, but still... :) Thanks for the tip about "Love Medicine" - I've been meaning to read something Erdrich for awhile, so you've just confirmed my usual go to: start at the beginning, the debut novel. Thx Garrett!

Thanks as always for reading, Troy!! Recompose seems really great, can't wait to see what you post! And, I don't know when it is I'll be able to, but I really want to read more of Erdrich. The friend who recommended Love Medicine to me has read, I think, four or five books of hers and has nothing but really positive things to say about each.

Not only are you a wildly talented writer, but you're also an on-point recommender (is that a word?)! This was insightful and fascinating!

I’m pretty sure “Love Medicine” was required reading for a class I took shortly after the book was released. I had a professor, Louis Owens, a Native American novelist and Steinbeck expert who kept abreast of other N.A. works. While at Univ of New Mexico, we all were friends/colleagues with Rudolfo Anaya, Luci Tapahanso, Joy Harjo, Leslie Marmon Silko and others. Erdrich was always talked of with reverence. It’s been a day or two, but this may be the prompt I need to read it again! Thanks for this.

My pleasure! Thank YOU for reading and commenting, Lee, and for sharing your experiences. I’ll have to check out the works of these authors (I’ve read some Harjo, but not nearly enough). I love knowing that Love Medicine was required for you then, and it makes me think that it was, and maybe still is, elsewhere as well. Growing up in Michigan, I’m just kind of surprised that it didn’t show up at some point, especially given that Michigan is part of the same region in which Love Medicine takes place.

Haha caught me! I’ve listened for a while, and have largely enjoyed it, and therefore feel kind of weird bitching about the French Laundry thing. Still love plenty of their interviews with non-Hollywood folks, but now I just shut it off as soon as they transition to the fact check.
