If your novel is any indication of how cinematic it is, I've no doubt The American Queen would be too. I'll read it ASAP and let you know my thoughts. It's good to see some great films still doing well at the theater. I think in part because people want to see something good, and alas, I've seen decline in the quality in shows and movies as of late. I think the movies/shows that preach to the audience and independent projects will do fantastic, whether through cinema or online.

It IS all a swiftly tilting landscape, Garrett - you are braver than me, taking a stab at getting your novel on screen. I just wish Netflix would stop canceling shows without resolving them (while I still throw money at them every month...)

I like the rebrand and the new title block - I'm inspired!

Thanks Troy! I'm so glad to hear you're liking the rebrand! Annnd yeahhhh I have no idea what to expect with the attempts at getting anything on screen 😂 I wouldn't say I'm optimistic, just because I know how many things need to fall in line in order for it to happen, the overwhelming majority of which are totally out of the writer's control. But it's remarkably hard to quiet the dream entirely. I figure I'll be semi-ready for it should the day come? Haha

Excellent write up and thoughts.

In my opinion, a vast vast overspend on The Rings of Power. I didn't rate that at all. Reasonable production values, but didn't think the script or acting was especially compelling. Insane money, really.

Would love to look over the pilot, but the file won't download for me. Just throws up an error.

Oh no! So sorry about the download not working. In the last couple days I've made a bunch of changes to my newsletter -- one being that it's no longer The Em(erald) Dash -- and because the file had been uploaded to the old domain, well, yeah, no good.

It should work without issue now! Many thanks for bringing it to my attention (as well as for the kind words).

If you do go in and read the pilot, as long as you've read through Part 3 of the novel, you're all good in terms of spoilers.

Re: The Rings of Power... I actually haven't seen it. I saw the trailers, of course, as well as the branded packaging Amazon shipped everything in as promo. But isn't it crazy the kind of money involved, especially for it to function as a lead generator? It feels rude of me to refer to it as such, given all the time and effort put forth by cast and crew, but when the parent company makes nearly $514 billion in 2022 alone, I'd wager there are several at Amazon that see it, and all of Prime Video's offerings, as simply an arm of their content marketing efforts. An expensive one, sure, but an arm nonetheless.

Slow reply, sorry Garrett. Meant to respond yesterday but time eluded me.

Aha, that makes sense. I like the new logo on the rebrand, heh 😁 that's cool.

I'll give this another download when I'm back at my laptop.

My wife recently read some alarming stats about the tiny fraction of money that it would take to better support screenwriters etc from the major companies, including Netflix and Amazon. I think you're probably right regarding the latter. Prime is just a small small part of their portfolio.

I'm including this in an upcoming Recommendations post, but thought I'd share here as well because it's relevant to what we're chatting about (regarding streaming and pay / opportunities for writers) --> https://youtu.be/ILaU78Oo7XM
